Whimsy is back, too as in pointillist dots of eccentricity. Maureen Doherty, BAFTAs 2015 Red Carpet Hair & Beauty 2015 the owner and inspiration behind the shop Egg, lives in a Belgravia basement. She has made it charming with white and gingham, linen and French antiques. A little terrace, just below street level, serves as a summer diningroom, set with curly French ironwork chairs and table. Above it, on a tiny roof (some eight square feet) that sits level with the London pavement, she plans to plant a wildflower meadow – a scattering of poppies, buttercups and cornflowers among the white mansions of Eaton Place.
In the Evesham valley, Charles Hudson farms fields of BAFTAs 2015 Red Carpet Hair & Beauty 2015 delphiniums (a heavenly sight in itself), which he turns into the prettiest confetti imaginable for his Real Flower Petal Confetti Company. Far across the country, in Suffolk, Jasper Conran has planted a sweetpea alley straight through his formal kitchen garden. Two long rows of twiggy sticks are wreathed in every colour of sweetpea imaginable. Walking through it in high summer is like dancing through clouds of scented butterflies. The house, an Elizabethan moated manor, could have seduced a more conventional eye than Conran’s to banks of sombre yew and wreaths of knot gardens, but it is the frivolity of the sweetpea alley that makes the garden sing.
