Can hair sunburn?
I keep reading about special shampoo and conditioner you should use on holiday to protect your hair against the sun’s rays. Do I really need them? Sam says: Hair that’s been exposed to sunlight, saltwater and chlorine (that’s yours after two weeks in Corfu, then!) needs special care. Using products that contain the latest UVB-absorbing technology to shield from chlorine and sun before you hit the heat will help a bit.
Check out Boots Sun & Swim Protective Hydration Spray, £3.59, or coat your hair in Kerastase Soleil Gelee Aqua-proof, £11.50, as you’re sunning yourself on the beach. However much protection you use, chances are, your hair will still feel the strain after a day in the sun.
Luckily, there’s a huge range of special shampoos that have ingredients to remove salt, sand and chlorine, while remaining gentle enough to keep the natural balance of the hair.
Charles Worthington Sun Time Sun Wash UV Protection Shampoo, £1.75, and Sun Time After Sun Repair Conditioner, £1.75, work well and come in travel-sized bottles. Also, check out John Frieda Cool Dip Refreshing Shampoo, £4,25, and Smooth Sailing Detangling Conditioner, £4.25. Or, you could wear a hat, but where’s the fun in that?
