THE FINER POINTS OF THE MIND-BODY METHOD There is more to the successful practice of running by feel than doing workouts. The mind-body approach encompasses every factor that is relevant to performance. To refine your running, you will need to channel setbacks and negative emotions to positively effect your training and motivation. Over time, running and crosstraining will improve communication between the brain and the body, which will extend your potential. Find your own best stride. Don’t waste your time trying to learn a one-size-fits-all running technique system. You have to find your own best stride by trial and error. Reflect on your running habits to determine which of these strategies you need to incorporate: Be sure to run enough, because the stride is everything, and the stride improves through refinements in communication between the brain and the muscles. More running equals more time with the lines of communication fully active. Consistently vary your running (different speeds, surfaces, gradients) to create an unstable environment for your neuromuscular system as it relates to running and thereby trigger rapid stride evolution. Expose yourself to fatigued running as often as you can without accumulating fatigue, which helps stimulate rapid evolution of your stride. Limit your use of conscious stride manipulation to specific technique changes that are likely to prevent the recurrence of specific injuries. In other words, if you’re not broken, don’t fix your stride.
