Ketoconazole is an antifungal drug available in tablets, as a cream, and as a shampoo. Manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals, it is
used to fight yeast infections, oral thrush, ringvvorm, and hard totreat fungal skin infections. Ketoconazole may also be helpful in treating androgenetic alopecia.
HOW DOES İT VVORK?
Ketoconazole appears to interfere with the production of testosterone and acts as an anti inflammatory agenttwo reasons why it has been investigated for the treatment of androgenetic alopecia.
A 1998 study conducted at the University of Liege in Belgium found that ketoconazole shampoo used alone or in combination vvith minoxidil increased the size and density of hair, as well as shifted more hair follicles into their grovvth cycle. Investigators speculate that ketoconazole may reduce levels of testosterone around the hair follicles. Ketoconazole is a nonsteroidal agent.
Even though the findings of this study are good news, more research is needed to verify the results. Further, no tests have yet been conducted on ketoconazole tablets and their effect on baldness.
