Cyproterone Acetate (Androcur)
Cyproterone acetate (CPA) was one of the first steroidal antiandrogens ever used to treat hair loss. Sold as Androcur, it is available only in Europe and Canada.
HOW DOES İT WORK?
Taken orally, CPA is a synthetic steroid that obstructs the activity of androgens by preventing them from attaching to receptors in the cells of the skin and hair follicles. It also reduces the activity of the ovaries, so that much smaller amounts of androgens are produced.
HOW IS İT USED?
CPA has been well tested, with results showing minimal to moderate hair growth in women. Most often, it is used in combination with an estrogen (usually ethinyl estradiol). This combination helps reduce levels of testosterone in the body.
