Of the great variety of teas and coffees to choose from, black teas and limited amounts of coffee are all right for Kapha to drink, and to a much lesser extent, those with Pitta constitutions, if it feels comfortable. Whichever of the many different flavors of coffee or tea is your favorite, or whether it is decaffeinated or not, the effect is the same because a bitter, slighdy pungent taste and dry quality dominates all of them. Black tea is somewhat astringent and drying as well. The combination of these tastes and qualities increases Vata and Pitta dosha slightly. Just like fruit juices, milk, and herbal teas, coffee and black tea are best for digestion when enjoyed outside of the main meal.
