Wild Swans author Jung Chang brings her pioneering biography of Mao, co-written with her husband, Jon Halliday, Stateside this month. Isabel Hilton pays a visit to their London home. He writer Jung Chang sits in the elegant first-floor sitting room in the roomy house in London’s Notting Hill that she shares with her husband and coauthor, Jon Halliday. Now 53, she wears a simple beige dress set off by a pair of jade earrings. Poised and petite, she is preparing for a Far East tour, following the hugely successful British publication of her and Halliday’s ground breaking biography, Mao: The Unknown Story (Knopf), which is being published here this month. As long as I have known her, Jung Chang has seemed determined to erase the memory of the enforced drabness and uniformity of her youth in China. In the early eighties, at a garden party in Oxford, among a group of intellectuals dressed in shabby English chic, she seemed like a vision from a Fragonard painting in an exuberant long dress topped with a large hat, lavishly garlanded few lines in a book called The Winds of War by Herman Wouk, encountered by chance in 1972, that helped fire her dream of another world. “There was a woman in it who bought a pink dress to go to a reception. It created such waves in my mind: the idea that if you were going to a cocktail party, you could just go out and buy a dress,” she tells me. Later, she would write of that passage, “I closed my eyes and caressed in my imagination all the beautiful dresses I had never seen or worn.” In September 1978, as a 26-year-old teaching assistant from Sichuan University, Jung Chang boarded a plane in Beijing to come to London on a Chinese government scholarship. Behind her lay the years of turmoil and political repression that had led to the early deaths of her father and grandmother. Ahead of her lay possibilities she could only imagine.
