Flanagan herself believes she was helped by the injury. In an interview for the Web site Take The Magic Step, Flanagan was asked if she had ever considered giving up during her long battle with the foot problem. “I never have thought that I was going to give up,” she answered. It is natural to experience frustration, bitterness, and even outright despair when dealing with a protracted injury. Even if you understand and accept the idea that injuries can benefit your running by making you hungrier, you will almost certainly experience such emotions the next time you are injured. But believing in the potential benefits of injury will reduce your frustration and help you pass from the woe-is-me phase to the looking-ahead phase of the injury experience more quickly. Even when injury causes cannot be identified and learned from, injuries can prompt changes in training methods and other running-related practices that not only reduce the risk of future injuries but also make a runner better.
