EXERCISES DURING FIRST TRIMESTER

The comeback experience is truly one of the most wonderful experiences in the life of a competitive runner. Having had my share of injuries, I have also experienced my share of comebacks, so I know this feeling well. Even in the early days of a postinjury return to form, when your fitness level is still low, the combination of feeling steady improvement, seeing the prospect of continuing improvement ahead, and relishing every step of every run makes running more enjoyable than it is at almost any other time. Now, I would never wish an injury upon myself just for the sake of a postinjury comeback. But I earnestly believe that in many cases a runner can race better at the end of a year that begins with an injury than she can at the end of an injury-free year, because the greater hunger of the recently injured runner more than makes up for the lost training. So powerful is the brain’s influence on running performance that it is sometimes better to be hurt than complacent. If you’re skeptical concerning this point, consider the example of Shalane Flanagan. In the first phase of her running career, which began in high school and ended when she developed a foot injury in 2004, at which time she was fresh out of college, Flanagan accomplished a great deal. She won a national title in the mile while at Marblehead (Massachusetts) High School and won two NCAA cross-country titles at the University of North Carolina. She was destined to become a successful professional runner, but few could have predicted the heights of greatness she would reach after struggling for nearly a year and a half to overcome her foot injury. In her very first race after having surgery to remove an extra bone from her foot, Flanagan broke the American record for 3,000 m. She has since set American records at 5,000 m and 10,000 m and won a bronze medal at the latter distance in the 2008 Olympics.Pregnancy Exercises for the First Trimester Bestcelebritystyle
