10. You never know what might work. If you talk about injuries with other runners as much as most runners do, you are bound to hear some crazy magic solutions advocated now and again. One time I complained about a case of piriformis syndrome to a friend and athlete, and she suggested I try something called the Sacro Wedgy. This is a small, wedge-shaped piece of plastic available only through the Internet. You sit on it and supposedly it lets your piriformis muscle relax and thereby alleviates the nerve impingement that causes pain. I was highly skeptical about this product, but my friend was adamant and the thing doesn’t cost much, so I bought it, sat on it, and 20 minutes later my injury was gone. Sometimes things that should not work do. But just as often, things that should work do not. In 2004 I had knee surgery to clean up some fissured cartilage that my orthopedist assured me was the cause of my nagging knee pain. The surgery did not work. Eccentric strengthening exercises for the calf muscles and Achilles tendon are touted as a miracle cure for Achilles tendonopathy. I have done these exercises until I was blue in the face, to no avail. The lesson in the unpredictability of injury treatments is twofold. First, try just about anything to fix your breakdowns, and never give up trying to find a solution no matter how many treatments fail you. Second, never place too much hope and expectation on any single measure. That is another sure way to drive yourself nuts. Try everything and expect nothing. This is the way to find solutions without making yourself miserable in the process. My most recent spate of injuries included plantar fasciitis in the left foot and Achilles tendonosis in the left leg. After taking 10 weeks off from running with no abatement of pain, I decided to start running again a little, figuring that, if rest did not help, running would not hurt. The morning after I completed my first short, slow run, I was surprised to find that my Achilles and heel felt a bit better. After my next run, they felt better still, and after two more runs I was almost pain free. So an injury that was caused by running and perhaps exacerbated by rest was ultimately cured by running.
