Overall Volume There are two general philosophies of training volume, which we might call minimalism and maximalism. The minimalist philosophy is summed up in celebrated triathlon coach Joe Friel’s injunction, Do the minimum amount of training necessary to achieve your goals. By contrast, the maximalist philosophy says, Do as much volume as your body can handle or, alternatively, Keep increasing your volume until you stop improving. 
