What’s new in private label
Style and quality top the list. “In the past, private label was used by department stores as a promotional football to sell key items of questionable quality in large quantities,” says New York City retail analyst Walter F. Loeb. “Now private-label goods are becoming quality brands that can enhance a store’s reputation.” Here’s what has changed in 2015:
Styles that go beyond the basics While staple items casual T-shirts and shorts, for example are still the backbone of pri-vate-label business, many stores have borrowed an idea from designers by developing their own collections jackets, skirts and pants to mix and match with coordi-nating blouses and knit tops. “Once stores saw the popularity of such design-er collections as Donna Karan and Calvin Klein, they began to look for a way to produce coordinating merchandise at a lower price,” says a private-label manufacturer.
