In every corner of the world, the Gap is the same. Walking into the Gap on the historic tree-lined Champs Elysée in Paris is like walking into the Gap in Miami’s hulking new Dolphin Mall: pale modular shelves with meticulously folded shirts resting on top, well-groomed sales staff manning their work zones, compartments filled with orderly stacks of jeans and khakis, impulse items like Gap fragrance and candles at the cash wrap even the smell of the stores seems to be the same. Despite a well-publicized drop in its sales and stock price in 2001–2002, there are still about thirty-five Gap stores in New York City alone, not to mention the dozen or so stand-alone GapKids and babyGap locations. One summer, two Japanese girls stopped me on the sidewalk as I was walking in Times Square. “Excuse me, where’s the Gap?” one of them asked, as if she were asking directions to Carnegie Hall, the Empire State Building, or some other landmark. I pointed to all four corners there was literally a Gap store within a few blocks to the north, east, south, and west of us. EXTRA CHEESE, PLEASE We are consumers of McFashion. In our “I want it now” world, fashion has begun to resemble fast food: fast, disposable, easy, unintimidating, entertaining, and largely homogeneous. Just as McDonald’s had taken over the globe, dishing out their uniform and consistent burgers and fries, mass-market clothing retailers like the Gap have succeeded in spreading predictability in fashion. Just as we can enter a McDonald’s in Dallas and order the same meal as we can in Munich, we can enter a Gap store in both cities and buy the same shirt. Just as McDonald’s golden arches have become an all-too-familiar symbol, so too has the Gap’s simple blue sign. Just as McDonald’s owes a great part of its success to marketing, the Gap’s greatest strength has always been its ability to make no-frills clothes seem like must-haves. In June 1998, the Gap one-upped the McDonald’s drive-through window, introducing Gap-to-go, a clothing delivery service for busy New Yorkers. Shoppers simply select the item, color, and size from a menu, then fax or call in their order. Orders can be delivered the same day to any location in Manhattan. And for those on an extremely tight deadline: one-hour rush delivery.hijab casual ideas on Pinterest | Hijabs, Hijab Fashion and Hijab … Bestcelebritystyle
