Grown-ups, who weren’t at all taken with the back-crack trend, expressed their confusion. After students at Milwaukee’s South Division High School began wearing the extremely low jeans, school staffers found themselves in an odd dress-code position. “With all the training I’ve had, and all the experience, I never thought I’d have to do booty checks,” principal Don Krueger told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in December 2001. In its earliest days in the McQueen show, builder’s bum seemed far too outrageous for everyday wear, the type of trend that was meant solely for the catwalk, in much the same way as see-through blouses and three-inch miniskirts. Alas, a cheeky trend that had piqued the fashion crowd’s interest in the form of the enfant terrible’s controversial bumsters soon became a mass-produced product, eventually being worn in a watered-down form by teenage girls in Milwaukee, only to head quickly toward its tacky death, but not before proving that today even the most ridiculous trend can advance to the forefront of fashion. Over the centuries, clothing styles have gone from functional to elitist to democratic to comically contagious. Today, fashion is all of those things. Our clothes still protect our bodies and preserve our modesty (although we show a lot more skin than in olden days), they still align us with certain social groups (club kid vs. country club kid), and they still act as a symbol of our democratization, since nearly every trend can be followed by anyone. And now, in this day and age of the infectious trend, the bottom line (literally and figuratively in the case of bumsters) reigns supreme. As a result, not only are Fashion Victims constantly on the lookout for The Next Big Thing, but retailers and the media are also constantly touting every item as The Next Big Thing. As a result, fashion doesn’t strive to become better per se, as perhaps a carmaker might endeavor to create a better-looking, better-running automobile. Instead, companies seem satisfied to dupe the public into thinking that something ugly is beautiful just long enough for them to make a quick buck.Celebrity Street Style of the Week: Fearne Cotton, Nikki Reed … Bestcelebritystyle
