For decades, designers have known that their illustrious names alone can sell nearly anything, so they engage in multimillion-dollar licensing deals, offering their names for use by others to make and promote a variety of products. In the 1970s, designers like Valentino and Pierre Cardin began to license their names for everything from sheets to luggage to toilet-seat covers (by 1970, the House of Cardin had licensed its name for use on more than six hundred products). Donna Karan reported that its fastest growth segment was in its licensing division including accessories, jeans, home, and bath which grew to over a billion dollars in sales in 2000.
