More than other forms of therapy, existential sports counseling demands courage of the client, and I think that is appropriate, because alongside talent and hard work, success in running demands courage above all else. Distance running is among the most painful and scariest sports we have come up with, and a runner must be brave in the purest sense to succeed in it. Steve Prefontaine famously said, “I run to see who has the most guts.” He was wise to do so, because by making a consistent, overt effort to be brave as a runner, he could run to the best of his ability. Winning easily is not even satisfying. When I asked Alberto Salazar to rate his overlooked victory in the 56 mile 1994 Comrades Marathon among his career accomplishments, he told me that it was among the two or three most treasured moments in his life as a runner precisely because it was the hardest thing he had ever done in running. All runners are the same in this regard. The very thing that hooks most of us on the sport is the experience of making it to the finish line of a race after having resisted intense temptations to slow down or stop in the preceding miles. There’s just something uniquely soul satisfying about proving our courage to ourselves. It’s good to remind yourself why you got hooked on running in those inevitable moments when you are tempted to be cowardly. You love running in large part because it proves your guts. That gutsy person is the authentic you. Always choose to be that person. Just be sure to not lose sight of what is truly courageous and what is really cowardly. Sometimes quitting is the brave thing to do. For example, in football there is tremendous team social pressure to “play hurt.” Players who hit the field and try hard despite the pain of injuries are celebrated; those who sit out with anything less than a blown knee are shamed. And sometimes the praise and the criticism are fair. Other times, however, it is simply stupid to play hurt. In that case, players risk their long-term health and really only hurt the team.
