STARRING KIERAN CULKIN,CLAIRE DANES,JEFF GOLDBLUM, AMANDA PEET.ANDSUSAN SARANDON; DIRECTED BY BURR STEERS UNITED ARTISTS,AUGUST2.

As the eponymous Igby, Culkin (The Cider House Rules) gets to hit just about every major rite of passage: He runs away from both military school and his misfit family (Sarandon plays his mother), journeys to New Yorkalone, hooks upwith his playboy godfather (Goldblum), hasaflingwith his godfather’s girlfriend (Peet), and falls in love with a rebellious coed (Danes). Sounds like fun, but first-time writer-director Steers says the roughest part ofthe shoot was putting his affable young star through his turbulent paces. “Itwas pretty hard to watch scenes that constantly required him to be ripped apart emotionally,” Steers says. Culkin says that he was more nervous about his love scenes with Peet. “It was the first time I had ever done oneofthose, but the way the scene goes,

Igby isn’t really the one in control ofthe situation.” undertheCOVERS: Bibliophile Goldblum would occasionally gather a grou p for story ti me between takes. Once, after a tryst scene with Peet, he plopped into a beanbag chair and read aloud from The Great Gatsby while still, ahem, in costume. “That’s one of my most cherished memories,” Culkin says, “being read to by JeffGold-blum with his pants down around his ankles.”
