Adolescent and childhood experiences are vividly present in some of the poems in 27-year-old Caitriona O’Reilly’s first collection, The Nowhere Birds, but so are her imaginative excursions into myth and meditations on place and nature. Birds of all kinds are a motif throughout the collection, carrying varying emotional significance. O’Reilly is influenced by Emily Dickinson, among others, but has her own clear voice and successfully imbues an unfeeling world with meaning. Like her fellow Irishman Louis MacNeice – from whom her title is borrowed – she moves easily between the colloquial and the lyrical, and manages a deceptive naturalness within self-imposed formal constraints.

Childhood incidents are treated with indulgent humour or suffused with fairytale fantasy. The poem “Thin”, where semi-skimmed milk provides “the bare bones of a meal”, gives an acute angle on anorexia. Sexuality is evoked in “Pisces” through sweaty teenage dreams of “cuttle-ink tattoos/describing blue-rinse mermen,/each muscular wave awash with sex and phosphor.” Born in Dublin and currently living in Bray, O’Reilly’s personal landscape has always been dominated by the sea, and it is a constant presence in this collection, at times communicat-ing unease, at others conjuring up the excitement of potential discovery: “the whole world at night-time/a wide sea full of starfish waiting to be caught.”
