This month’s cover girl is Rachel Weisz, currently one of Britain’s most successful film stars. Rachel is no flash-in-the-pan wonder; not only is she known as an intelligent woman, but as one who has paid her dues as an actress, working her way up to find herself in pole position now thanks to her performance in The Constant Gardener. Her acting may be first class, but she is also prepared to participate in the game of glamour and style that is now demanded of actresses if they want to build up a high profile internationally. Happy to step out in red-carpet gowns, she is also a real London girl.

Traditionally, many British actresses have been less than keen to be seen as clotheshorses, product endorsers or even people who particularly care about how they are dressed, but Rachel seems to have trodden that tightrope successfully as she becomes the face of the new fragrance Burberry London, at the same time as being nominated for every big award going. For this month’s Best celebrity style, her old friend Bay Garnett styles her in this season’s muted golds, while she is interviewed by Natasha Walter an old schoolmate, as we later discovered. Read the result on .

In complete contrast, on you’ll find a rare interview with Sigrid Rausing, one of this countiy’s wealthiest and most private philanthropists, whose generous involvement in a wide range of causes is particularly inspiring. Rausing now owns one of Britain’s most valued publishing successes, Granta, long responsible for producing some of our very best fiction and non-fiction.

Granta is known in particular for championing the work of new writers, and our books roundup by Frances Osborne on points out a few of the new names to watch. Book lovers will also be pleased to find an interview with former literary wild boy Jay Mclnerney, who came to fame in the Eighties with Bright Lights, Big City, his tale of urban over-indulgence. This month he publishes a new novel rumoured to have the same kind of resonance.

It was around the Eighties that I first worked with Vicki Woods, who joins us as a contributing editor, writing regularly for Best celebrity style and adding a personal and humorous voice to our fashion comment. Her subject this month, the wedge shoe, will strike a note with all of us as we wonder just how innovative a shape and high a heel we can really wear . Wedge heels are one of the quickest instant wardrobe updates of this season along with a big patent belt or bag. Team with lace, as in “The Shining”, edited by Miranda Almond and shot by Horst Diekgerdes , to add a fresh feel to a simple look. Alternatively, just add them to your regular jeans. As Hadley Freeman discusses in “Obsession” , jeans have become as invaluable in our wardrobes as our bras and most of us own as many pairs. Yet where do you find the perfect style for you? I hope our pages help in this famously difficult task.
