Like me, Philips dreams of a time when going out meant sporting endless white gloves, glass slippers, and a mile-high coiffure. But even if your own fantasy stops short of Cinderella, even if you cannot imagine peeking at your friends from behind a glorious disguise, surely you will concede that really glamorous parties are all the joys of artificethe game of starring in your own fairy tale?

Philips made his first masks a decade ago for a group show of up-and-coming Belgian designers, one of whom was a young Olivier Theyskens. Now, he says, laughing, he is making a mask from the same lace that Theyskens uses at Rochas. When I ask him what he is working on at this very moment, he describes a creation inspired by that famous icon of glamour Mickey (or perhaps, he allows, Minnie) Mouse. Another mask takes its cues from ancient Byzantine geometric patterns, while a third is influenced equally by African tribal art and the black-and-white costumes Cecil Beaton designed for My Fair Lady’s Ascot opening-day scene.
