I did this for about nine months until was left with my natural ‘fro. When I first saw it, I was in shock, crying. I wasn't used to it, and I didn't feel that I could be sophisticated, sexy, or successful with my kinky curls. But staring in the mirror that clay, I knew my mind set had to change.

It took a few months and many YouTube videosfor me to learn how to manipulate and work with my hair, and eventually I began to accept and love how it looked.

At the same time this was happening, it seemed the media was finally beginning to shine a spotlight on women celebrating their individuality and expanding definitions of beauty. But we still have a way to goand I'm not just talking about African American women and natural hair.
