SHOES Rebecca, a twenty-one-year-old dance teacher in Yreka, California, wore a pair of new white sandals, open at the toe and in the back, while she was traveling in Japan a sightseeing visit that required a lot of walking. “By the time I got home, I had blisters and my feet were bleeding from the sandals,” she recalls. She could have stopped at any number of stores along the way to pick up a pair of comfy slippers or walking shoes, but decided to stick it out. “I had spent about $50 for those shoes because they were really cute and I thought they’d go perfectly with my white shorts,” says Rebecca. “Instead, I got blisters and a bloody mess.” The Fashion Victim is willing to put up with all sorts of pain for the sake of fashion. In a 2001 survey of 1,724 women by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), 74 percent of respondents reported that they wore high heels; 80 percent said their feet hurt. The survey also found that, for either fashion or career reasons, 59 percent admitted to wearing uncomfortable, even painful, shoes for at least an hour each day. The AAOS estimates that foot problems cost the U.S. about $3.5 billion a year, and that 75 percent of these problems are caused by ill-fitting shoes. Shoes are dangerous, and we’re not just talking about those $500 titanium-heeled sandals with razor-sharp 31/2-inch “killer” heels that Manolo Blahnik removed from his collection in 2001 for fear of causing security problems at airports. Horror stories aren’t hard to come by. “I’ve seen loads of toenails that have gone black from tootight shoes and had to be removed because they were flapping off, usually from a shopping spree in inappropriate footwear,” says Leah Claydon, D.P.M., a podiatrist in Melbourn, Great Britain. “I’ve seen thousands of corns that can only be caused by too-tight high-heeled shoes, and in one extreme case, a corn on a little toe had become infected, which led to a bone infection and amputation of the toe, and it nearly cost the woman her life.” For people who wear high heels more than a few times a week, the pain frequently goes beyond short-term problems like blisters and sore arches, says Claydon. They’ll typically notice that it becomes very hard to walk barefoot without getting pain in their calves. “This is because the steep angle raising the heel slackens the Achilles tendon,” she says. “Over time, the tendon shortens, making it very difficult to put the heel to the floor when barefoot the only way you can achieve it is by pronating the foot [rolling it inward]. This in turn internally rotates the knee and hip, which in turn tips the pelvis forward, throwing the person’s body weight in front of the body and increasing the lumbar curvature of the spine imagine what damage that does!”The desert boot guide for men: choose it well, wear it well – Kinowear Bestcelebritystyle
