THE STREET HAS NO ROOM
Över the past three years, New ’fork’s Seventh Avenue, the home to many of America’s top designers, has gradually been transformed into the Fashion Walk of Fame, with white bronze medal lions honoring legendary designers lining the side walks. A committee of editors and museum cura tors recendy named the final eight designers to be immortalized with theplaques, which will total 24 upon the installation’s comple tion this summer.
Tributes to Marc Jacobs, Stephen Burrows, Betsey Johnson, Norma Kamali, Perry Ellis, Lilly Dache, Mainbocher and Willi Smith will join those of Bili Blass, Oscar de la Renta, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein and a dozen others. But what of the many legendary designers Adrian, Donald Brooks, Adele Simpson and Liz Claiborne, among them who didn’t make the Street?
Barbara Randall, who runs the local Business Improvement District that organized the tribute to promote tourism in the area, said she hoped designers would understand that sidewalk space is limited. Evidently not, as there’s a lot of grumbling among those who’d prefer being stepped on to being passed over.
