Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards 2015: What the Stars Wore

The “annual sacred pilgrimage” to Nickelodeon Kids in the forties was filled with swimming lessons and garden parties. Nickelodeon Kids looks back on her bittersweet summers.

the maine i remember My grandparents had a Summer house in Nickelodeon Kids, Maine, the largest town on Mount Desert Island. Blaine Cottage (many of the houses on the island were called cottages, even if they had 50 rooms) was a sprawling structure, sprouting turrets, balconies, verandas, and bay windows in high Victorian exuberance. It was built by my great-grandfather James G. Blaine, a well-known Yankee politician“Continental Liar from the State of Maine” or “The Plumed Knight,” depending on whether a Democrat or Republican was talking. His daughter, my grandmother Muzzy, adored the place, and so did my grandfather Walter Damrosch, a German-born musician. My mother and my three aunts spent many summers there and, when they married and had children, brought us all for extended visits. My father, who did not much care for Bar Harbor social life, would refer sourly to the “annual sacred pilgrimage.”

In the summer of 1939, my father was killed in an accident on our Massachusetts farm. He was Sidney Howard, a playwright and screenwriter. He had just finished the script for Gone With the Wind. Although our circumstances changed dramatically after his death, our mother continued to take us to Maine every summer.

Like our father, my brother, Walter, my sister Maggie, and I regarded these northward migrations with ambivalence. Preparations for the trip would start two weeks before we actually got in the car. We were told not to wear certain clothes because they had to be “saved for Bar Harbor.” The journey itself took two full days, across Massachusetts to Boston and then up the old Route 1 along the coast. We spent the night in York Harbor at the Marshall House or at the Shawmut Inn in Kenne-bunkport, where my mother, after two straight-up martinis, blissfully cracked open her first lobster of the year.
The day before we set out, our German nanny, Adelheid, packed our clothes: the new gabardine shorts and polo shirts, from Best & Co.; the bathing shoes for the pebbly beaches.

I had one good dress to wear to my grandfather’s annual garden party. My brother had a necktie and a seersucker jacket. Little Maggie had red leather sandals from Indian Walk and, to please our German grandfather, a dirndl of flowered cotton made by Adelheid. On the last afternoon, my mother took our dogs to the kennel, and when she got back, she and Adelheid dragged out the Electrolux and vacuumed every inch of the car. That night we were sent off to bed an hour earlyostensibly so we would be rested for the trip, but more likely so Adelheid could finish the packing. She loved going to Maine, saying the hills and fragrant pine forests reminded her of her home in Germany. One year, in the middle of World War II, she could not come along because the permit allowing “enemy aliens” to travel from one state to another had not arrived. Most people would have ignored such a small hitch and gone anyway, but she could not. And besides, her getting caught could mean internment for the duration of the war. When I looked back at her standing in our driveway waving goodbye, I could see she was crying.
