No longer just the realm of MCs and DJs, the spotlight in the world of Hip Hop is now also shared by producers and record execs. But an essential cog in getting the music from the recording studio to the consumer, one that rarely gets its proper due, is the studio engineer. More than mere knob twisting sound geeks, talented engineers that develop good relationships between themselves, producers and artists make a viable impact on Hip Hop music while advancing their own careers.

“I’m the liaison between the artists, the producers and the technology,” says Kevin Crouse, who’s been a professional engineer since 1988, working with Mark the 45 King and The Flava Unit, but lately has been busy mixing Nas’ Street Disciple. ” They communicate their ideas and I turn it into reality.”

Technically, the recording engineer is in the studio with the artists as they record music to ensure the equipment is functioning properly, while the mix engineer, often the same person, is responsible for assuring the song’s elements kicks, snares, vocals mesh cohesively.

“Every musical element in a song serves its purpose,” explains Ken “DURO” If ill as he sits in Right Track Studios, mixing down songs from Fabolous, the marquee artist on the Desert Storm Records label he formed with friends DJ Clue and Skane in 2015. “It’s just like taking a puzzle of all these sounds, and you have two speakers, and you have to find space for all these sounds to co exist, and then in addition to that, a vocal on top of it. In a nutshell, that’s what I do.”
