What to Look For

One of the best things to happen to cheap chic shoppers in years is the DEMOCRATIZATION OF DESIGNER CLOTHES. Target sells clothes designed by Proenza Schouler, Thakoon, and Libertine; H&M sells Karl Lagerfeld, Viktor and Rolf and Stella McCartney; and Topshop sells a line designed by Kate Moss. I -went to the opening day of these collections with great anticipation and have been met by mixed results. Karl Lagerfeld for H&M was a big disappointment for me because most of the clothes were made in black chiffon and cheap black chiffon just looks cheap to me, no matter the shape or the design. So I returned to H&M with adjusted expectations for the Viktor and Rolf opening and was happily surprised to return home with bags full of clothes: a classic trench, a well-cut tuxedo jacket, some great-fitting lingerie, and a black woolpeacoat among them. They were better at choosing which fabrics worked in which shapes and there was a larger variety of choice. While Kate Moss’s clothes for Topshop looked stunning in the ads, the quality just looked really too poor for my taste to actually buy much more than an evening clutch as a gift for my assistant.
