They no longer can get as much and it is uncertain whether the trade can be fully resumed. Aside from political difficulties, and aside from war devastation, the breaking up of great estates and the substitution of small peasant proprietorship has reduced agricultural output of grains and has increased domestic consumption of wheat. Finally, disturbances in Asia and other remote parts of the world have hampered production and export of goods on which industrial nations depend. Malaya and Indonesia have also been in turmoil to achieve their freedom. Will these nations in the coming years produce enough goods for themselves, and will they be able to export increasing quantities? Perhaps the answer is yes, but it is a feeble perhaps. A restoration of German production, a growth of trade between Eastern and Western Europe, and a period of productive advance in the Far East are three of the essential conditions for even beginning to supply the world’s needs for goods.
