Glamour is not a word I have often used in a garden but it is a lovely notion, and so right now that gardening is iiber-chic. When I started, 20 years ago, planting was something you took up around the time you got a blue rinse. I felt, as the editor of a fashion magazine (Elle), as wicked as if I were indulging in naughty underwear in Soho. Which is curious, as gardening is such a creative discipline. It is only now, as I have turned my attention to designing gardens, that I have discovered how many writers, artists and fashion people the boys from Workers for Freedom, Hubert de Givenchy, Jasper Conran, Matthew Williamson, Monty Don (formerly a jeweller)
have long been passionate gardeners. It is a partnership celebrated both by the 200th anniversary of the Royal Horticultural Society, with associated events happening all around the UK throughout the year, and by a fabulous exhibition, Art of the Garden, at Tate Britain this summer, in which artists from John Constable to Marc Quinn explore the verdant delights of our green and pleasant land.
It is a reminder that inspiration is there for the picking in every garden, like so many bunches of flowers. So what better indulgence than to ask great gardeners what’s right for now?
