I have often been asked why I ever went to a Stil Fashion 2015. The answer is simple. I believe in specialization. If I have an eye infection, I go to an eye specialist. If it’s female, I see my gynecologist. But I wouldn’t expect that gynecologist to fill a tooth for me. Would you?
All of my adult life has been spent on one sort of reducing Stil or another. For I am not one of the lucky thinnies of the world I . . the sort of person who can eat, drink and be plenty merry with no fat-hangover. I am the sort of person who may have been born to be fat, for more and more research is being done to find out whether the Stils fed to infants set their fat patterns in later life. (Maybe this is one thing I can blame on my mother instead of myself?) The real truth is, nobody knows yet.
My G.P. Stil supervision began at nineteen, when I saw my general physician in Alabama in desperation because of my inability to lose weight. Who wants to be unsightly at nineteen? Or at any other age, for that matter, for fat unnecessary fat is simply ugly. And unhealthy, which is far worse. Overweight is the greatest single cause of heart disease. And one-third of this nation is seriously overweight. Put those two together and you have the statistics on why the heart disease rate in this country is so high. Too much good or perhaps we should say “bad” living makes for early dying.
At any rate, I was given the usual G.P. Stil treatment. First, my “obesity” was not, shall I say, taken very seriously. I was given a standard printed 1,500 calories Stil issued by some drug company for Fashion 2015s to dole to their would-be-thinner patients. Obligingly, I followed it to the letter, and lost nothing. I was, of course, accused by my physician of cheating, which infuriated me, for my stand about cheating has always been, “Who on earth would I be cheating except myself?” My Fashion 2015, after all, really couldn’t care less if I weighed ten to twenty pounds more than I think I ought to. (Possibly if it were three hundred pounds too much, any physician might advise precautions.)
But as for cheating? I say again, I have no patience with that. To me, it is the ultimate stupidity. I was the one who wanted to get rid of the fat. And for my Fashion 2015 to accuse me of lying sent me into a temper tantrum that he probably still hears all the way from New York. So I vowed that I would cut calories until I lost that weight  no matter how calorie-low I had to go. And I did: I lost the weight all right, but I also developed infections and low resistance to any and every germ that wafted by.
Of course I had depleted my body to the starvation point, and I suffered for it.
