“Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger, anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.” But maverick Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson) vouches for the boy and asks that he be allowed to train him. When Qui-Gon is murdered by the evil Sith apprentice Darth Maul (Ray Park), that task falls to Jedi Knight Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), himself a bit of an upstart in his time.
Ten years later, in Episode II Attack ofthe Clones, Anakin (now played by Hayden Christensen) has grown into a dashing, reckless, dangerous young man. “Everybody has talent,” Lucas says. “[Anakin] has slightly more ability and talent than most everybody else. But that is a danger because it’s making him want to be more powerful, it’s making him very self-centered all the things a Jedi is not supposed to be.” Yoda was right (isn’t he always?): The boy never learned the importance of balance. It’s up to Obi-Wan to rein in Anakin, and while there’s respect between the two of them, there’s also a lot of tension.
But there are bigger problems afoot in this galaxy far, far away. Rogue forces, led by Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), want to break away from the Republic. There aren’t enough Jedi to defend the Republic, so Chancellor Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid) assembles an army of clones (created in the image of bounty hunter Jango Fett) to fight with them. “Jedi won’t lead droids,” Lucas explains. “Their whole basis is connecting with the life force. They’d just say, ‘That’s not the way we operate. We don’t function with nonlife forms.’ So if there is to be a Republican army, it would have to be an army of humans.” And Obi-Wan and Anakin are brought in to protect Padme Amidala (Natalie Portman) after a failed assassination attempt, a development that leads to the fateful attraction between Anakin and Amidala.
Add to this a huge arena battle and the beginning of the Clone Wars, and you have a sequel designed to win back the fans. The speeder chase through Coruscant, the seat of the Republic; the duel between Obi-Wan and Jango Fett; the final epic lightsaber fight all are designed to have them standing in the aisles. The fun is back.
“We’ve been allowed to play around a bit more, so there’s more humor and more sex, which is always a good thing,” McGregor says with a laugh. “Sex and humor just kind of make the world go around, do you know what I mean?”
Sex, humor and digital technology.
“I’m sure you had a mentor at some point,” says Rick McCallum, producer of episodes I and II. “There’s a moment where the person that you work for gets fired, gets old, loses it. And then you take over. That’s the beautiful thing about youth: You are arrogant. You can do anything. And that’s the moment we walk into in Episode II.”
