I can definitely feel, I think, my age creeping up on me, he said in one of these interviews, which took place when he was 30, shortly before the Beijing Olympics. In the mornings, it seems like every year I have to get up about ten minutes earlier than I did the year before just to get warmed up and ready to go. But as far as feeling fresh, it’s always been just a kind of calloused, dull feeling in the middle of these 160-, 170-mile weeks where I never feel great but I never feel like just stopping and walking either. Yeah, it’s been about the same for the past five years or so. These are not the words of a man who is enjoying his training. When I read them, I thought that Sell would not run particularly well in the Olympics, and he did not. But he was so committed to his high-mileage training and so accustomed to tuning out the voice of intuition within him that he changed nothing afterward. As he prepared for the Boston Marathon the following spring, he was interviewed again, and he sounded much the same, maybe worse. I’m definitely feeling wearier, he said. The beginning of this segment was one of the hardest ones that I’ve had in a while. I think it was a little bit of a mental letdown after the Olympics and so forth. Physically, too, in dog years, I’m 60 years old as far as mileage goes. I mean, I’ve been averaging 140 miles a week for the last five, six, seven years. I’m definitely feeling that I’m getting towards the end in my career here.
