Right now you might want to identify your body type or constitution according to Ayurveda. This simple chart gives a general idea of the three body types. By answering the questions in the Body-Type Quiz that follows, you can get an even clearer idea of your own constitutional needs.
Everyone is naturally made up of the three fundamental qualities. It is likely that two or, more rarely, three of them will predominate in your constitution. Even in a combination one of the elements, dominates, and it is mentioned first in identifying your type. For instance, a Pittaata type is somewhat more Pitta and less Vata than a Vataitta type. The dietary considerations for those with dual or combined doshas are mainly seasonal ones. We’ll discuss these combinations and seasonal cooking in more detail when we talk about menu planning in Chapter 5.
The following quiz is divided into three sections. For the first 20 questions, which apply to Vata dosha, read each statement and mark, from o to 6, whether it applies to you.
o = Doesn’t apply to me
3 = Applies to me somewhat (or some of the time)
6 = Applies to me mostly (or nearly all of the time)
At the end of the section, write down your total Vata score. For example, if you mark a 6 for the first question, a 3 for the second, and
a 2 for the third, your total up to that point would be 6 + 3 + 2 = n.
Total the entire section in this way, and you arrive at your final Vata score. Proceed to the 20 questions for Pitta and those for Kapha.
When you are finished, you will have three separate scores. Comparing these will determine your body type.
For fairly objective physical traits, your choice will usually be obvious. For mental traits and behavior, which are more subjective, you should answer according to how you have felt and acted most of your life. Of course, if you answer with respect to your current state, the quiz may reflect your imbalances rather than your constitution.
